Studying Medicine in Malaysia: Requirements, Duration and Real Fees

Chat with us on WhatsApp

Medicine is the subject parents ask MAIGA about most, and the one where the most inaccurate numbers get repeated. This guide explains how a Gulf or Arab student enters a Malaysian medical school after high school, the difference between the science foundation and direct entry, how long the degree takes, and what to check about accreditation and recognition before paying any fee, with a live table of the medicine and surgery programmes available on the MAIGA website right now instead of a general estimate.

Why Arab students study medicine in Malaysia

Malaysia combines medicine taught in English, modern teaching hospitals and a cost of living lower than the UK, Australia or Ireland, in a Muslim environment where students and their families feel at ease. Many private medical schools run their programmes in partnership with, or on the curricula of, British, Australian or Irish universities.

On the other hand, medicine is among the most expensive and most competitive subjects, and admission depends on high-school subjects and grades more than any other field. That is why we do not recommend medicine to everyone who asks for it: we review the documents first and say honestly which paths are genuinely open.

Entry requirements of Malaysian medical schools

Malaysian medical schools usually require a science-stream high-school certificate with a high average and strong grades in biology, chemistry and physics or mathematics. Each school has a minimum set by the Ministry of Higher Education and the Malaysian Medical Council, higher than for other subjects, and it is written on the programme page on the MAIGA website.

English is a real, unavoidable requirement in medicine: most schools ask for an IELTS score or an equivalent, and some admit the student to an intensive English programme first and then test them. A school may add an interview or an aptitude test. The exact requirement is on each programme page, and MAIGA reviews your documents before applying and tells you what is missing.

The path after high school: science foundation, then MBBS

A holder of an Arab high-school certificate usually does not enter the MBBS directly; they first complete a Foundation in Science or an equivalent such as A-Levels, then apply to the medical school with that result. Taking the foundation at the same university eases the transition, but it does not mean automatic admission to medicine.

We therefore advise a student aiming at medicine to start with the science foundation at a university that has a medical school, and to know from day one the foundation average that school requires. The foundation year guide on the MAIGA website explains this path in detail with a live fee table.

Duration, study years and training

The Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery (MBBS) in Malaysia usually takes five years: two or three years of basic medical sciences, then the clinical years in teaching hospitals. Add the foundation year before it, and the road from high school to a medical degree is about six years.

After graduating, anyone who wants to practise in Malaysia needs a housemanship period and registration with the Malaysian Medical Council, while those returning home follow their own country's internship and licensing rules. Ask about this at home before you start, not after you graduate.

Accreditation and recognition: what to verify before enrolling

First verify that the programme is accredited by the Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA) and recognised by the Malaysian Medical Council (MMC); these two are the basis of any later evaluation abroad. Then check the recognising body in your own country: in Saudi Arabia the Ministry of Education for degree equivalence and the Saudi Commission for Health Specialties for practitioner classification.

Recognition lists change from year to year and differ between Gulf states, so do not rely on general statements from any agency, including us. Read the guide to Malaysian universities recognised in Saudi Arabia on the MAIGA website, ask your consultant about the school you are considering today, and verify yourself with the official body in your country before paying fees.

Fees: a real table from the programmes available

The table on this page lists the medicine and surgery programmes available on the MAIGA website now, with the university, level, duration and the total programme fee in ringgit as shown on each programme page, not an estimate. Medicine has the highest fees of any subject and is usually paid in yearly or semester instalments set by the university.

Beyond tuition there are registration, visa, health insurance and housing costs, listed separately on the programme page. For a full budget in riyal see the cost of studying in Malaysia guide, and ask a MAIGA consultant for a free comparison of the medical schools that match your grades.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I study medicine in Malaysia straight after high school?

Usually not; a holder of an Arab high-school certificate first completes a science foundation or an equivalent, then applies to the medical school with that result. Some international certificates enter directly, depending on each school's rules.

Is a Malaysian medical degree recognised in Saudi Arabia?

It depends on the university, the programme and the time of application; equivalence is decided by the Saudi Ministry of Education and practitioner classification by the Saudi Commission for Health Specialties.
