Studying in Malaysia Without IELTS
Chat with us on WhatsAppThe question the MAIGA team hears most from Arab students is: "I have no IELTS, can I still study in Malaysia?" The short answer is yes in most cases. Not because English does not matter, but because Malaysian universities accept alternatives to IELTS and issue conditional offers that are completed with an intensive English programme before the degree starts. This guide explains each route as the universities apply it, so you can choose the shortest and cheapest one for your situation.

Is IELTS a requirement for admission in Malaysia?
IELTS is not a legal requirement for studying in Malaysia. It is a requirement each university sets for each programme. What the Malaysian authorities require is that an international student proves a level of English before starting a degree taught in English, and a university has several ways to accept that proof; IELTS is only one of them.
So the answer differs from programme to programme: medicine, pharmacy and law usually require a fixed band with no exceptions, while many programmes in business, computing, engineering and design accept a student without IELTS through a conditional offer. Each programme page on the MAIGA website states the English requirement once the university confirms it.
Alternatives universities accept
The most common alternative is the internal placement test run by the university itself or its language centre on arrival; the result decides whether you start the degree directly or take English levels first. Some universities accept the test online before you travel.
Other alternatives many universities accept: TOEFL, PTE Academic, the Malaysian MUET, Cambridge and Linguaskill certificates, and in some cases a secondary-school or university certificate from an accredited institution that taught in English. Accepting any of them is the university's decision, so ask your MAIGA consultant about the specific programme before paying for any test.
The intensive English pathway, then the degree
Most Malaysian universities have their own language centre offering an Intensive English programme in graded levels, each a few weeks to two months long. You study from the level set by your placement test until you reach the level your degree requires, then move into the degree without applying again.
The advantage is that the visa is issued under the university from the start and you live on campus from day one. The table below shows the universities currently offering an English programme on the MAIGA website, with their fees.
The conditional offer: what it really means
A conditional offer is an official letter from the university saying: your place on the degree is reserved provided you meet the English requirement before the semester starts. It is enough to begin the student-visa process, book accommodation and plan your budget.
What it does not mean: a final offer regardless of your result. If you do not reach the required level in time, the university postpones your degree start to the next intake while you continue English. You usually keep the place but lose time, which is why we advise beginners to start English early.
The fastest route: a language institute, then university
For a student who needs more than one or two levels, an independent language institute in Kuala Lumpur is sometimes cheaper and faster than a university centre: more hours a day, smaller classes, and a start every two weeks or every month instead of waiting for the semester. When you reach the required level you apply to the university with the institute's certificate or an official test.
MAIGA coordinates both: enrolment at the institute on a student visa, then the university application from inside Malaysia, with an early university offer where the university allows it. Compare the institutes on the institutes page; the monthly price is on each card.
Common mistakes and advice
Mistake one: rushing to pay for an IELTS test, scoring below the requirement and ending up on the English pathway anyway. Ask first about the programme's requirement and the accepted alternatives.
Mistake two: choosing an English programme without a student visa or at an unlicensed provider; its certificate does not count at the university. Mistake three: relying on another student's experience at a different university. Each university decides for itself, and the MAIGA team confirms the requirement with the university directly before you enrol.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I study in Malaysia without IELTS?
Yes, in most fields: universities accept an internal placement test or alternative certificates and issue a conditional offer completed with an intensive English programme before the degree. Medicine, pharmacy and law are stricter.
Which alternatives to IELTS are accepted in Malaysia?
The university's internal placement test, TOEFL, PTE Academic, MUET, Cambridge and Linguaskill certificates, and sometimes a previous certificate taught in English. Each university decides per programme.
How long does the intensive English pathway take?
It depends on your placement-test level; each level is a few weeks to two months. Your consultant estimates the duration after your result; nobody can set it before the test.
Is a conditional offer enough for the visa?
Yes. A conditional offer is an official university letter and the student-visa process and accommodation booking start with it, provided you meet the English requirement before the degree starts.
University language centre or an independent institute?
If you are one or two levels short, the university centre is simpler: same visa and no new application. For a beginner level, an independent institute in Kuala Lumpur is often faster and cheaper. Ask the consultant about your case.
