Building Tremendous Inner Strength (3) 💪🔥

A winner's mindset and discipline that never bends

With a sincere heart he affirms that the "brutal" life he lives, and the obsession that reaches for greatness, cannot be summed up in a single book. It is a purely personal experience, and if he described it with complete accuracy, people might think he deserves to be locked up because of the intensity of the challenge and effort he puts in every day

He describes himself as someone who constantly strives to extract more from every moment, who thinks all the time, and has constant discipline, and never deviates from his path 🎯 Any injury or obstacle he faces, he deals with in a positive way, because he has a winner's mindset 🏆 And this mindset, well, few people can understand it. After nearly thirty years of living like this, he does not understand questions such as

"What do you do to have fun?" or "What are your hobbies?" because his whole life has become passion and a pursuit of greatness🚀

Huberman admits that he sometimes wonders about his recreational activities and mentions a few, such as podcasts, reading and exercise, but he sees that what distinguishes Goggins's experience is that the difficulty starts from the very beginning. Huberman wonders whether the difficulties Goggins faced in his childhood and youth, such as obesity, lying and trying to please others, were necessary to flip that inner "switch" As if to ask: was pain his real fuel? 🤔

Cries of anger and the power of non-conformity 😠🛡️

Goggins answers frankly that he does not know whether these difficulties were necessary, but they certainly made him feel "uncomfortable"😟 As a child it was easy for him to be "odd" and make no effort at school 📚 and he learned how to be a "persona", meaning to play a role🎭 But his feeling of shame about that persona he had been is what opened the door to change for him🚪 Every day was like a performance, and every book was like a foreign language. This constant feeling of being "haunted" by his past is what pushed him to bring out the person he is today, and this "haunting" is still there, because however much he improves, this change is not permanent, and the inner struggle continues. This explains why he is in a state of constant alertness, never resting⚡

David Goggins describes his decision not to join social media in 2013 as stemming from his deep awareness of the effort he put in to reach where he is. He was afraid of being judged by ordinary people who had not made the same effort, just as he used to do in the past, as if he had lived his own experience of judging others, so he decided not to be part of that circle🔄

Huberman comments, from a non-psychological perspective, that Goggins's story is moving, especially in his realisation that there was never anyone who stood by him or protected him during his childhood and youth. Huberman points to the importance of having just one person who believes in the child, while he himself had wonderful mentors and coaches. Huberman realises that Goggins was alone against the world, and wonders whether this feeling of loneliness is what led him to develop this strong self-awareness and ability to protect himself from outside influences, such as social media📱

Goggins agrees with Huberman, but adds that a lot of anger built up in him, and is still there, and can never disappear because of the difficult circumstances he grew up in😡 He stresses that there was no one to save him, which is why, when he now sits with smart people who give him advice and guidance in his forties, he feels he has come to know what is best and worst for him. He says it took tremendous focus to reach this stage, and he realises that social media often shows the bright side of life, while he does not teach in that field, so he had to find a way to present his message in his own way, one that suits his struggle🗣️

Greatness is not merely talent; it is the product of deep inner struggle, unwavering discipline, and the ability to turn pain into fuel for growth
