Studying Computer Science and AI in Malaysia: A Guide to IT Degrees

If you enjoy coding, data or technology, you have probably asked whether to study computer science in Malaysia. Malaysian public and private universities offer a wide range of computing degrees taught in English, from classic computer science and software engineering to artificial intelligence, data science, cybersecurity and games development. The difficulty is that the programme names overlap: is AI a separate degree or a track inside computer science? How is information technology different? And how do you check that a programme is properly accredited? This guide explains what the Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA) and the universities themselves say about computing degrees, how entry works, and how MAIGA can help you choose and apply.

Why study computer science in Malaysia?

Most computing degrees in Malaysia are taught in English, and they follow national programme standards set by the MQA. That means the overall shape of a computer science degree is similar from one university to the next, while the specialisations and electives differ. The same standards make industrial training (an internship with a company) compulsory at bachelor's level, so you graduate with real workplace experience. Alongside the well-known public universities, many private universities run programmes linked with UK or Australian partners, and some offer dual-degree options. You can browse the institutions on MAIGA's universities page.

Computing and IT degrees in Malaysia and how they differ

The MQA's Programme Standards: Computing (third edition, 2023) name five main computing disciplines: Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Technology, Information Systems and Data Science. Other labels you will see in programme titles, such as artificial intelligence, cybersecurity or multimedia, usually appear as a specialisation within one of those five. Here is how the main options compare.

Computer Science

Computer science covers the core of computing: programming, data structures and algorithms, operating systems, networks, databases and the mathematics behind them. As an example, Sunway University describes its BSc (Hons) Computer Science as a three-year full-time degree, with first-year modules such as Computer Mathematics, Programming Principles and Networking Principles, and a final year that includes Artificial Intelligence, Distributed Systems, a capstone project and an internship.

Software Engineering

Software engineering focuses on building large software systems in a disciplined way: requirements, design, testing, quality and project management. It suits students who want to work as developers or software engineers in product teams. It is offered by public universities such as Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), whose Faculty of Computing lists a Bachelor in Software Engineering, as well as by many private universities.

Artificial Intelligence and Data Science

AI is usually offered as a specialisation of computer science. Asia Pacific University (APU), for instance, offers a Bachelor of Computer Science (Hons) (Artificial Intelligence) over three years (six semesters), starting with modules such as Introduction to Artificial Intelligence and Mathematical Concepts for Computing and finishing with a final-year project in AI. Universiti Malaya's Faculty of Computer Science and Information Technology lists Artificial Intelligence and Data Science among its Bachelor of Computer Science programmes. Data science, by contrast, is a discipline in its own right in the MQA standards, built around statistics, data analysis and machine learning. It suits students who enjoy mathematics and working with evidence.

Cybersecurity

Under the MQA standards, cybersecurity is offered as a specialisation within one of the five computing disciplines, which is why you will see titles like "Bachelor of Computer Science (Cyber Security)". Universiti Tenaga Nasional (UNITEN) states that its programme in this area takes three years full time with 120 credit hours, covering cryptography, network security and information security, plus industrial training and two project courses. UTM offers a Bachelor of Computer Science (Computer Networks and Security).

Information Technology and Information Systems

Information technology is the more applied side of computing: running infrastructure and networks, web and business applications, and supporting organisations' technology. Information systems sits between technology and management. As explained below, the maths entry requirement for these two is usually lighter than for computer science, software engineering or data science.

Games Development and Multimedia

If you want to combine programming with design, some universities offer dedicated programmes. APU describes its BSc (Hons) in Computer Games Development as a three-year (six-semester) degree covering programming, game engines, game design, 3D modelling and computer graphics, with an internship of at least 16 weeks. Universiti Malaya offers a Multimedia Computing track, and UTM a Bachelor of Computer Science (Graphics and Multimedia Software).

Degree length and structure

How long a computing degree takes depends on the university and its academic calendar. Many private universities, including APU, Sunway and UNITEN, describe three-year full-time programmes. UTM's programme specification gives a minimum of eight semesters on a two-semester academic year, which is about four years. Always check the programme page itself, and remember that the stated length does not include any foundation year or English course you may need first.

The MQA standards set a minimum of 120 graduating credits for a single-major computing bachelor's degree. Most programmes follow a similar progression:

  • Early stage: programming fundamentals, computing mathematics, databases and networking.
  • Middle stage: core subjects such as data structures, algorithms and object-oriented programming, then the modules of your chosen specialisation.
  • Final stage: advanced modules and electives, a final-year or capstone project and, in many programmes, the internship.

Accredited programmes also include compulsory general subjects set by the MQA.

Internships and industrial training

Industrial training is one of the strengths of Malaysian computing degrees. The MQA standards make it compulsory at bachelor's level, with a minimum of 6 credits, roughly three months. Some universities ask for more: APU states a minimum of 16 weeks, and UTM requires students to pass industrial training worth 12 credit hours to graduate. Some public universities also run "industrial mode" (2u2i) programmes in which students spend a longer part of their degree working with industry, for example Data Science at Universiti Malaya and Computer Science (Data Engineering) at UTM.

When you compare universities, ask how placements are found: does the university arrange them, or do students apply themselves? International students also follow the university's rules and the relevant Malaysian regulations during their placement.

Accreditation: how to check a computing programme

MQA and the Malaysian Qualifications Register

Before you apply, check that the programme is listed on the Malaysian Qualifications Register (MQR) on the MQA website. Accredited programmes carry a code that starts with "MQA", which universities usually show on the programme page. The register distinguishes between full and provisional accreditation, so look at the status and the validity dates.

Malaysia Board of Technologists (MBOT) and the Seoul Accord

Some computing and IT programmes are also accredited by the Malaysia Board of Technologists (MBOT) as professional programmes. MBOT states that it is now a full signatory of the Seoul Accord, a multilateral agreement between bodies that accredit computing degrees in different countries, and the Seoul Accord's own website reports that MBOT was accepted as a full signatory in June 2024. Not every computing degree is MBOT-accredited, so if this matters to you, ask the university about the specific programme.

Entry routes and the maths requirement

There are three main ways into a computing bachelor's degree:

  1. Direct entry with a secondary school certificate that the university accepts for bachelor's admission, provided you meet the maths and English requirements.
  2. A foundation year, such as a Foundation in Science or Foundation in Computing, followed by progression to the degree with the grades the university sets. APU, for example, asks for a foundation pass with a minimum CGPA of 2.0 plus its maths requirement.
  3. A diploma, which can lead to a degree and sometimes to advanced entry. APU states that holders of an ICT diploma with a CGPA of at least 2.50 may enter Level 2 of the degree.

Maths matters. For Computer Science, Software Engineering and Data Science, the MQA standards require either a good result in Additional (advanced) Mathematics, or a pass with credit in Mathematics plus a science, technology or engineering subject, in which case students take a reinforcement maths subject at the start of the degree. Sunway and APU apply this rule on their programme pages. If maths is not your strongest subject, Information Technology, Information Systems or starting with a foundation year may be a better fit.

English requirements: examples from university sites

English requirements vary between universities. These examples come from the universities' own pages and from the MQA standards:

SourceStated requirement
MQA standards (minimum for international students)IELTS 5.0 or equivalent
APU, Computer Science (Artificial Intelligence)IELTS 5.0, TOEFL iBT 40 or PTE 47
UNITEN, Computer Science (Cyber Security)IELTS 5.0 or TOEFL iBT 42
Sunway University, Computer ScienceIELTS 6.0 or equivalent

If you do not yet have the score, many universities run intensive English programmes, or you can study at one of the English language centres in Malaysia first. Requirements can change, so confirm them before you apply.

Master's degrees in computing and AI

If you already hold a bachelor's degree, Malaysian universities offer master's programmes in computer science, information technology, data science, cybersecurity and artificial intelligence, some by coursework and some by research. Entry depends on your previous degree and grades. Arabic readers can find more in MAIGA's master's in Malaysia guide.

Recognition back home

Recognition of a foreign degree is decided by the authorities in your home country. For Saudi students, the Ministry of Education sets general conditions for equivalency of qualifications obtained abroad, including prior approval for self-funded study abroad, the institution and programme appearing on the Ministry's list of ranked universities, full-time in-person study in the country of study, and a genuine certificate. These conditions can change, so check the Ministry's website before choosing a university. Other GCC students should check with their own ministry of higher education.
