Studying Engineering in Malaysia: Disciplines, Entry and Accreditation

Engineering is one of the most popular choices for students from Saudi Arabia and the Gulf who plan to study abroad, and many of them decide to study engineering in Malaysia. Malaysian universities offer a wide range of engineering degrees, most programmes open to international students are taught in English, and students can choose between established public universities, private universities and branch campuses of British and Australian universities. The key question, though, is whether the programme is professionally accredited. This guide explains the engineering disciplines you will commonly find, how long the degree takes and how it is structured, what accreditation by the Engineering Accreditation Council (EAC) and the Washington Accord actually mean, how to check a programme yourself, the usual entry routes and English requirements, and what to think about for recognition back home.

Why study engineering in Malaysia?

Malaysian engineering degrees follow a structure close to the British and Australian models, and they appeal to Gulf students for several practical reasons:

  • Choice of institutions: research-focused public universities, private universities, and foreign branch campuses that award the degree of their home university.
  • Internationally benchmarked accreditation: engineering programmes accredited in Malaysia sit within the Washington Accord system, explained in detail below.
  • Flexible entry: you can start with a foundation year in engineering or science, or enter the first year directly with a suitable pre-university qualification.

You can browse institutions on the MAIGA universities page and see the engineering programmes we work with on the programs page.

Engineering disciplines commonly offered in Malaysia

Every university has its own list, but these are the bachelor's disciplines you will see most often.

Civil engineering

Design and construction of buildings, bridges, roads, water and drainage systems and wider infrastructure. A natural fit for anyone drawn to large infrastructure projects.

Mechanical engineering

One of the broadest fields, covering thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, machine design and manufacturing. Some universities offer specialised strands such as automotive or manufacturing engineering.

Electrical and electronic engineering

Power systems, electronics, telecommunications and control. Some universities run it as a single combined degree; others split it into separate electrical, electronic or telecommunications programmes.

Chemical engineering

Industrial processes that turn raw materials into products, with strong links to petrochemicals, energy, pharmaceuticals and food processing.

Petroleum engineering

A narrower discipline offered by a number of universities, focused on oil and gas exploration and production, reservoir engineering and drilling.

Mechatronics engineering

A blend of mechanical engineering, electronics, programming and automatic control, well suited to students interested in robotics and industrial automation.

Computer and software engineering

Computer engineering combines hardware, software and embedded systems; software engineering focuses on designing large software systems and managing software projects. One caution: some "software engineering" degrees are run by computing faculties as computing programmes and are not necessarily EAC-accredited engineering degrees. If you plan to register as a professional engineer later, check which kind of accreditation the programme holds.

How long is an engineering degree in Malaysia?

A Bachelor of Engineering with Honours in Malaysia is typically a four-year programme after foundation or an equivalent pre-university qualification. Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), for instance, states that its civil engineering degree has a minimum duration of four years and a maximum of six, and requires 135 credit hours to graduate. Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia (UTHM) lists its civil, electrical, electronic and mechanical engineering degrees as four years (eight semesters) on its international admissions page.

The structure usually looks like this:

  1. Early years: engineering mathematics, physics, programming, engineering drawing and the foundations of your discipline.
  2. Middle years: advanced discipline modules, laboratory work and group design projects.
  3. Industrial training: a period of placement with a company or engineering organisation. In UTM's civil engineering programme, for example, industrial training is a separate course that must be passed.
  4. Final year project: an individual research or design project assessed in the final year.

Accreditation: the EAC and the Washington Accord

In Malaysia, a licensed university is not enough on its own: engineering degrees need professional accreditation.

What is the Engineering Accreditation Council?

The Engineering Accreditation Council (EAC) is the body delegated by the Board of Engineers Malaysia (BEM) to accredit engineering degree programmes, as the EAC states on its official website. It brings together representatives of BEM, the Institution of Engineers Malaysia (IEM), the Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA) and the Public Service Department (JPA).

What does the Washington Accord mean for you?

The Washington Accord is an international agreement between engineering accreditation bodies in which each signatory recognises programmes accredited by the others as substantially equivalent to its own. The Board of Engineers Malaysia became a full signatory in 2009, according to the University of Malaya's engineering faculty and BEM's own accreditation page. Other full signatories include the UK, the US, Australia, Canada and Japan.

In practice, an EAC-accredited engineering degree from Malaysia is recognised by the other full signatories as an equivalent academic qualification for entry to the engineering profession. It is recognition of your degree, not an automatic licence to practise: every country keeps its own registration and licensing process.

Engineering versus engineering technology

You will also see the Bachelor of Engineering Technology in Malaysia. It is a separate, more applied pathway with its own accreditation system and does not appear on the EAC list of engineering programmes. Make sure you know which one you are applying for.

How to check that a programme is EAC-accredited

Do not rely on the word "accredited" in an advert. Instead:

  1. Check the EAC list. The EAC publishes a list of accredited engineering programmes in Malaysia on eac.org.my, organised by institution, with a document for each one showing the programmes and the period of accreditation. The site notes that accreditation is valid only for the period shown.
  2. Match the exact programme name and campus. Accreditation is given to a specific programme at a specific campus. The same degree title may be accredited at one campus and not listed at another.
  3. Think about your graduation year. According to the EAC, accreditation since 2009 is tied to the graduating year, so the real question is whether the programme will be accredited when you graduate. New programmes may only hold provisional accreditation until their first cohort graduates.
  4. Ask the university in writing to confirm the programme's current EAC status.
  5. Check with BEM if in doubt. BEM advises students to check with it before starting their studies, because accreditation lists can change without notice.

For branch campuses of foreign universities, a programme may be accredited by the EAC or by the accreditation body in the home country, if that body is a Washington Accord signatory.

Entry routes and requirements

Each university sets its own requirements, so treat the following as a general picture.

Route 1: a foundation year

Many Gulf high-school graduates start with a Foundation in Engineering or Foundation in Science before the degree. The University of Nottingham Malaysia, for example, describes its Foundation in Engineering as a one-year preparatory programme, and successful completion leads to a place on one of its engineering degrees.

Route 2: direct entry to year one

Students with an accepted pre-university qualification, such as A-Levels, the International Baccalaureate or a relevant diploma, can apply directly to the first year. UTHM asks international applicants for three A-Level principal passes in one sitting, an IB Diploma or an equivalent diploma, while UTM asks for at least three grade Cs in STPM, A-Level or an equivalent, plus programme-specific requirements.

Mathematics and physics

Almost every engineering degree expects solid results in mathematics and physics, and chemistry is often required for chemical, mechanical and civil engineering. UTHM, for instance, sets minimum grades in mathematics and physics or chemistry for electrical and electronic engineering, and in mathematics, physics and chemistry for mechanical engineering. How a Saudi or other Gulf secondary certificate is assessed, and whether it allows direct entry or requires foundation, differs between universities and is decided when your application is reviewed.

English language requirements

Most engineering programmes for international students are taught in English, and requirements vary noticeably. Examples published on official university sites:

UniversityPublished example
Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM)IELTS 6.0 or TOEFL 550 to be exempt from the intensive English course; faculties may set higher requirements
Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia (UTHM)IELTS band 4.5 and above in its general table for international students
University of Nottingham Malaysia (Foundation in Engineering)IELTS Academic 6.0 with no less than 5.5 in each element

These are examples and can change, so always use the requirement published at the time you apply. If you do not yet have the score you need, a common option is an English course before your degree; see the English language centres on MAIGA.

Recognition back home: equivalency and the Saudi Council of Engineers

For Saudi students, two steps after graduation matter from day one.

Ministry of Education equivalency

The Saudi Ministry of Education is responsible for the equivalency of degrees obtained outside the Kingdom, under its own rules, including the recognition status of the university and the conditions of study. Check the university's status with the Ministry before you enrol; our Arabic guide on Malaysian universities recognised in Saudi Arabia explains how.

Saudi Council of Engineers

The Saudi Council of Engineers states that all engineers practising in the Kingdom must be registered with it. Its published requirements for the engineer category include a bachelor's degree from an accredited engineering programme and, for Saudi citizens with qualifications from abroad, an equivalency certificate from the Ministry of Education or the Ministry's approval of the qualification, together with the degree certificate and transcript. The Council also says it verifies academic credentials with the issuing university before issuing membership.

Choosing a professionally accredited programme at a university recognised by the Ministry makes the road after graduation much clearer. The detailed rules belong to these authorities and can change, so confirm them directly before you decide. Other Gulf students should check the equivalent bodies in their own country.

Frequently asked questions

How many years does an engineering degree take in Malaysia?

A Bachelor of Engineering with Honours is typically four years, sometimes preceded by a one-year foundation depending on your qualifications.

Is a Malaysian engineering degree recognised internationally?

EAC-accredited programmes fall under the Washington Accord, which the Board of Engineers Malaysia joined as a full signatory in 2009. This recognises the academic qualification; it is not an automatic licence to practise in another country.

How do I know a programme is accredited?

Check the list of accredited programmes on eac.org.my, match the programme name, campus and accreditation period, and ask the university for written confirmation.

Do I need a foundation year?

It depends on your qualification and the university. Many Gulf high-school graduates start with foundation, while A-Level or IB holders who meet the requirements can often enter year one directly.

What IELTS score do I need?

It varies by university. Published examples include IELTS 4.5 at UTHM and 6.0 at UTM. Always check the requirement of your chosen university when you apply.

An engineering degree shapes your career for years after graduation, so choose only after checking accreditation and recognition. If you would like help comparing universities or understanding entry requirements, talk to a MAIGA consultant and we will guide you through each step.
