Studying Business in Malaysia: Degrees, MBA and Entry Routes

If you want to study business in Malaysia, you will find a wide choice: public and private universities teach business in English at every level, from a one-year foundation through the bachelor's degree to a master's or an MBA. The field is broad and leads to careers in companies, banks, government and your own ventures. Before you apply, though, a few questions matter: which business specialisations are on offer, how long the degrees take, whether accounting programmes are professionally recognised, and what an MBA asks of you. This guide answers those questions using what Malaysia's official bodies and the universities themselves publish, and explains how MAIGA can help you choose and apply.

Why study business in Malaysia?

Students from Saudi Arabia, the wider Gulf and beyond choose Malaysia for business studies for practical reasons. Programmes are taught in English at both public and private universities, the range runs from general management to narrow specialisations, and many degrees build an industry placement into the timetable. Programme quality is also checked through a national accreditation system run by the Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA), which gives you a clear way to verify a programme before you enrol.

Some Malaysian business schools also hold international business-school accreditation. Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM), for example, states that it has held AACSB accreditation since 2016. Accreditation of this kind is a plus, but it does not replace checking that your specific programme is accredited by the MQA.

Business degrees offered by Malaysian universities

"Business" in Malaysia is a family of degrees rather than a single one. Most share a common core in the first year or two (economics, financial accounting, management, statistics) before you move into your specialisation. The main options are:

  • Business administration: a broad degree covering management, marketing, finance, human resources and strategy. A good choice if you want a wide base before specialising or before a master's.
  • Accounting: the business field most closely tied to professional recognition, covered in detail below.
  • Finance and banking: financial markets, investment and risk management.
  • Marketing: digital marketing, consumer behaviour and brand management, offered either as a standalone degree or as a specialisation within business.
  • Islamic finance: an area where Malaysia is particularly well known. The International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM), for example, offers a Bachelor of Finance (Islamic Finance) that includes a compulsory 24-week industrial placement, according to the programme page.
  • Logistics and supply chain: for example UUM's Bachelor of Business Administration (Logistic and Transportation), listed in the EMGS programme directory with a duration of 48 months.
  • Human resource management: offered by several universities, including a dedicated bachelor's degree in human resource management at UUM.

You can browse and compare business programmes by university on the MAIGA programmes page, where each programme shows its details and the university's current fees.

The bachelor's degree: length and structure

Business bachelor's degrees in Malaysia typically take three to four years, depending on the university and programme. A few examples, taken from the universities' own pages:

  • Taylor's University lists its Bachelor of Business (Honours) with specialisation at 3 years including industrial training, and its Bachelor of Accounting and Finance at 3 years, full-time.
  • Universiti Malaya (UM) lists its Bachelor of Accounting at 128 credits, with a minimum of 7 semesters (three and a half years) including industrial training.
  • The EMGS directory lists UUM's Bachelor of Business Administration (Logistic and Transportation) at 48 months.

A typical programme combines general university courses, a business core, specialisation and elective modules, and usually an internship towards the end. Credit counts and module lists change over time, so the official programme page is always the reference. For more on this stage, see our Arabic guide to bachelor's degrees in Malaysia.

Studying accounting in Malaysia: professional recognition

If your plan is to work as an accountant or go on to a professional qualification such as ACCA or CPA, the professional standing of your accounting degree should be a key part of your decision.

The Malaysian Institute of Accountants (MIA)

Malaysia's Accountants Act 1967 regulates the accounting profession. Its First Schedule lists qualifications from named Malaysian universities and institutions that are recognised for registration with the Malaysian Institute of Accountants (MIA). Universiti Malaya, for instance, states that graduates of its Bachelor of Accounting are eligible to register as MIA members, subject to the practical experience required under the Act. Taylor's University states that graduates of its Bachelor of Accounting and Finance are eligible for the MIA Qualifying Examination.

Exemptions from ACCA, CPA and other bodies

Many Malaysian accounting degrees give graduates exemptions from some papers of international professional qualifications, but the number and conditions differ from programme to programme. Examples published by universities include:

  • Universiti Malaya states that its accounting graduates may receive exemptions from bodies including MICPA, ACCA and CIMA; that eligible students selected for its Structured Internship Programme are exempted from nine ACCA papers; and that fourth-year students can take selected segments of the CPA Australia programme under an agreement with the university.
  • Taylor's University states that its Bachelor of Accounting and Finance is accredited and recognised by bodies including ICAEW, ACCA, CPA Australia, MICPA and MIA.

Our advice: ask for the exemption details of your exact programme and confirm them on the professional body's own website, because exemption rules are reviewed regularly.

Marketing, HR and other management degrees

Marketing usually comes in two forms: a standalone marketing degree, or a business degree with a marketing specialisation (Taylor's, for example, offers a Bachelor of Business in International Business and Marketing). Both can lead to roles in digital marketing, sales and brand management. The same is true for human resources and logistics: some universities run them as separate degrees, others as tracks within business administration. If you are sure about your field, a standalone degree gives more depth; if you are still deciding, general business administration keeps your options open.

Entry routes: foundation, diploma or direct entry

There are three main ways into a business bachelor's degree in Malaysia:

  1. Foundation: many universities offer a Foundation in Business or Foundation in Arts. At Taylor's it takes one year, and progressing to the Bachelor of Accounting and Finance requires a foundation CGPA of at least 2.50.
  2. Diploma: Taylor's Diploma in Business takes two years and can lead into the degree, sometimes with credit for completed modules depending on university policy.
  3. Direct entry: the MQA's list of entry qualifications for international students places the Saudi General Secondary Education Certificate (Tawjihiyah) and other Gulf secondary certificates at bachelor's-degree entry level. Each university still sets its own grades and conditions, so some students are asked to complete a foundation first depending on the university, programme and results. Universities also accept A-Levels, the IB and other qualifications under their own rules.

English requirements: some examples

English requirements vary by university and level. Some published examples:

ProgrammePublished English requirement
Bachelor of Accounting and Finance, Taylor's University (international students)IELTS 5.0 or MUET Band 3.5, or equivalent
English-taught programmes at UUM (per the EMGS directory)IELTS 5.5 or TOEFL 550
Master of Business Administration, Universiti MalayaIELTS Academic 6.0, MUET Band 4.0 or TOEFL iBT 60

If you are below the required score, some universities run preparatory English courses, or you can study first at one of the English language centres in Malaysia.

Master's degrees and the MBA in Malaysia

An MBA in Malaysia suits professionals with work experience who want to move into leadership roles, while a specialised master's (in accounting, finance or management, for example) suits those who want academic depth or plan to go on to a PhD.

MBA entry requirements in general

MBA programmes normally ask for a bachelor's degree with a minimum grade, and many require work experience, but how much varies widely between universities. As an example, Universiti Malaya publishes these requirements for its coursework MBA:

  • A bachelor's degree with a CGPA of at least 3.00, or 2.50 to 2.99 together with one of the listed alternatives, such as related work experience.
  • At least three years of full-time work experience after the first degree, plus an interview.
  • English: IELTS Academic 6.0 or an accepted equivalent.
  • Full-time duration: three semesters of coursework.

By contrast, Taylor's University lists its full-time MBA at one year. Compare programmes on length, experience requirement and mode (coursework, research or mixed) before deciding. Our Arabic guide to master's degrees in Malaysia covers this stage in more depth.

How to check a programme on the MQA register

Before you enrol, look the programme up in the Malaysian Qualifications Register (MQR) on the MQA website. The register lists accredited programmes and qualifications, and you can search by qualification name, institution, field or level. The MQA's own FAQ makes three points worth knowing:

  • The register lists only programmes with full accreditation; programmes with provisional accreditation appear on a separate page.
  • Accreditation has a validity period tied to the student's graduation date; graduating outside it may mean the qualification is not MQA-accredited.
  • A non-accredited programme can cause problems later with postgraduate admission, credit transfer and employment.

Recognition at home

For Saudi students, qualifications earned abroad are evaluated through the Saudi Ministry of Education's equivalency service. The Ministry decides which universities, programmes and study modes it recognises, and its rules can change, so check the university and programme with the Ministry before you enrol and keep all your academic documents from day one. Students from other countries should check with their own ministry or recognition authority.
